Ideas for Creating a Functional Mudroom Space in Your Home

The organization of our daily lives can either create harmony–or havoc. One big part of that? The drop zone. This is the area where coats, shoes, bags and other “stuff” enters your home and gets immediately dropped. If you don’t have a functional mudroom space in your home, you probably understand the frustration of this all-too-common situation. If you think you don’t have room for a dedicated mudroom system, think again. At Rocky Mountain Shutters, Shades & Closets, we’ve got ideas for creating organization in your home.

Behind the Door

Take a look at the entryway of your home. Is there room behind the door? Many times, families believe they have to have a dedicated area for mudroom organization, but that’s not necessarily true. Even the narrow wall space behind the entry door can be outfitted with hooks and shallow shelving. Coats, backpacks, umbrellas and shoes can all have the appropriate elements to make storage a breeze.

Inside the Closet

You might have a front closet, like many homeowners. The problem? Most closets are inefficient, becoming a space to jam items away, but never really benefitting the daily lives of the family. You have two options: a closet system or a mudroom nook. That’s right–installing a closet system into a front closet allows you hanging, storage shelving above the hanging, and cubbies to add dedicated spaces for smaller items or basket storage.

The other idea? Just take the door off of the front closet, and turn this space into your own little mudroom nook. Add hooks for coats and bags, shelving for high storage, a bench seat and cubbies for shoes.

The Bottom of the Stairs

Consider the bottom of your staircase. There’s often additional room due to the layout of the home. Is there room to introduce a wall system that will provide a functional mudroom for your family? We love how creative homeowners can be when it’s time to make a space their own.

Flanking a Doorway

What if you don’t have enough space by the door, or in a closet? Consider adding built-ins that flank a doorway within your home. Many homes have an out-of-the-way bathroom, laundry room, or home office, and if you have any wall space , it’s time to take advantage. Adding custom built-ins allows you to create a beautiful look, add much-needed organization and finally use a previously neglected space.

In the Garage

What about preventing the problem before it even begins? Your garage might have just the potential you need! Garage space is commonly overlooked due to–you guessed it–daily disorganization. By tidying up your garage storage, you can also free up space around the entryway door to create a beautiful and functional mudroom.
