If you’ve got a linen closet in your home, chances are, it needs to be more organized. Springtime is the ideal time to tackle this task! Trust us when we say that creating organization in even the smallest closets of your home sometimes has the biggest impact! Our team, at Rocky Mountain Shutters, Shades & Closets, is here to give you tips on organization. Find everything easier. Put stuff in its place. Keep your belongings behind closed doors!
Evaluate & Declutter
This is one of the biggest endeavors–or maybe it just feels that way. The first step is to remove everything from your linen closet. Everything. The idea is to create categories of items. As you pull everything out, get rid of items that are broken, damaged or expired. (This could involve donation, recycling or garbage.) This is also a great time to reconsider whether the items belong in this linen closet, or if they should be housed elsewhere. Then, once you have the items you’re keeping, start thinking about how they might be best stored–from baskets or containers, to folded stacks.
Choose Drawers or Slide-out Accessories
Can you put a drawer in a reach-in closet? You definitely can! Some items are best stored in pull-out drawers and containers. For a built-in look, a simple drawer is a nice spot to keep items that you don’t want to lose, or you want to have quick access to, like scissors, safety pins, a needle and thread…the list goes on.
Use Adjustable Shelving
Many linen closets have some type of shelving in place, but if you’re looking to upgrade the function, we recommend solid, adjustable shelving. Wire shelving allows items to fall through, and there can be limits on the weight they can hold without bowing or falling. Fixed, solid shelves are a better option, but even those can’t customize the efficiency of the storage. Adjustable shelving tailors the storage options to fit exactly the way you store your belongings.
Place Dividers
Using dividers can be a great way to make linen closets so much more efficient. Separate textiles, like sheet sets or towels based on size.
Add Baskets, Containers or Bins
For additional storage of categorized items that need to be contained, choose bins, baskets or containers. If you have items that you need to identify quickly within the container, clear works best. For a category of uniform items, like washcloths or cleaning rags, you can choose solid color bins, or even baskets that add a bit of style to the closet. Even behind closed doors can be pretty.
Create Labels
Labeling the bins or the shelving spots can help get items sorted and put away faster and more efficiently.
Adopt Folding Techniques
You may not realize it, but there are a number of variations on folding that increase storage space, or save you time.
Realize Over-the-Door Opportunities
If you have enough room on the interior of any of your linen closets, over-the-door hooks and organizational items can be a clever way to increase storage. Simple pocket or pouch hangers can store additional items, or use an iron and ironing board holder.
