Before & After: A Whole-Home Window Treatment & Garage Storage Makeover

When homeowners move into a new home or live with existing window coverings for years, it’s easy to assume that what’s already on the windows is the best solution. In reality, every room serves a different purpose. The ideal window treatment should support the way that space is used, the homeowner’s lifestyle, and their personal style.

At Rocky Mountain Shutters, Shades & Closets, we recently completed a whole-home window treatment makeover project. We transformed multiple rooms throughout the home. While many of the “before” photos already had window coverings, our design professionals helped the homeowners discover solutions that better matched each room’s needs, privacy level, and functionality.

Take a look at how thoughtful window treatment selections made a difference throughout the home.

Dining Room: Enhancing Style & Light Control

While the dining room featured beautiful architecture and natural light, the uncovered windows created excessive glare during meals and left the homeowners feeling exposed to neighboring homes and passersby.

By selecting a window treatment tailored to the space, we were able to improve the aesthetics and light control, creating a more polished and welcoming dining environment.

Silhouette® Window Shades were chosen for the their ability to diffuse light beautifully and provide privacy for this street facing window.

Family Room: Comfort Meets Everyday Living

As one of the most used spaces in the home, the family room requires a balance of natural light, privacy, and glare control. The previous window coverings offered some functionality but didn’t provide the flexibility needed throughout the day.

Large windows bring beautiful views and abundant daylight, but they can also create glare on televisions and devices throughout the day. Because these windows were positioned high and difficult to reach, manual operation wasn’t practical.

The updated solution of motorized Designer Roller Shades allows the homeowners to enjoy natural light while reducing glare on screens and maintaining privacy when desired.

And since these are large windows in a hard to reach area, these motorized roller shades allow for ease and immediate comfort. They can set schedules for when they open and close based on routine and time of day.

Bedroom: Creating a More Restful Retreat

Bedrooms often require the most specialized light control in the home. Morning sunlight, exterior lighting, and privacy concerns can all interfere with creating a restful environment.

While the existing coverings helped serve their purpose, they didn’t provide the level of room darkening and privacy the owners want and deserve.

The updated solution of Designer Roller Shades creates a more relaxing environment. By selecting room-darkening fabrics, the homeowners gained better privacy, reduced morning glare, and improved sleep comfort.

You can see how the room is darkened, even during the day, allowing for a better sleep environment.

And the ability to then retract the window coverings into the headrail lets natural light in during the day.

Garage: Functional Upgrades

Garages often become catch-all storage spaces. Without custom organization systems, tools, seasonal items, and household supplies can quickly create clutter and make the space difficult to use efficiently.

Along with custom garage cabinetry designed to maximize organization and storage, we installed Duette® Honeycomb Shades. These shades can help manage natural light and are energy efficient.

This combination of garage storage solutions and high-performance window coverings elevated the garage into an organized and clean extension of the home.

What This Home Makeover Teaches About Choosing Window Treatments

  • Different rooms have different privacy requirements.
  • Large windows often benefit from motorization.
  • Bedrooms typically require stronger light control.
  • Dining spaces benefit from glare reduction and soft natural light.
  • Garages can become functional extensions of the home with custom storage and energy-efficient window coverings.

The best window treatment isn’t necessarily the same product throughout the home. It’s the solution that supports how each room is used every day. Whether you’re replacing outdated blinds, building a new home, remodeling a single room, or upgrading an entire house, choosing the right solution for each space can dramatically improve comfort and functionality.
