A Guide to Covering Tricky Windows

When you hear the term “tricky windows”, are there certain windows in your home that come to mind? Maybe they’re a little higher up than the rest, a large skylight, or even an oversized arched window. The good news? We have window treatments to beautifully cover these tricky windows when you need, and they are easy to adjust when you want to fully enjoy your view.

What Makes a Window a Specialty One?

Common windows are the typical square and rectangular ones we’re used to seeing in nearly every home. On the other hand, specialty windows are those that vary in shape and size. Because of that, not just any window treatments will be able to cover them well and leave them functional. Whether you’re looking to reduce the glare, increase privacy, or stabilize the interior temps in your home, we can help!

Angled windows are such a statement! Covering them can be a challenge. However, we have solutions that will help them work even better for you, for both style and function. Window shades, blinds, and plantation shutters are some of our favorite go-to solutions, enhancing the dramatic look of these tricky windows.

Arched windows offer such a classic and timeless look. Architecturally, these are stunning! They can also become a pain if not treated right because it will lead to uncomfortable lighting, temperatures, and lack of privacy. What to do?

When it comes to arched windows, there are two options, either leaving the top portion open to the natural light, or covering the entire window. The choice is purely up to you and what you desire for that particular space. Leaving the top open helps to let the natural light flow in, but it will all be directed above the direct line of sight in order to not be bothersome even at the brightest time of day.

We’re seeing a rise in popularity in this European window style: Tilt Turn. We are loving this style in just about every space, but they can be challenging to dress with window treatments. These windows allow you to easily bring the outdoors in and create an open and airy feeling throughout your home.

When it comes to adding treatments to tilt turn windows, our go-to is the TrackGlide™ System. These are installed by adhering to the edge of the window frame, allowing the windows to be opened and closed with ease–even when the shades are in place. Some of the many benefits are room darkening, light control, privacy, and energy efficiency.

Placement of Tricky Windows

While the windows above are tricky due to their shape or function, some windows are tricky due to their location in and around the home. Adjusting shades that are high up, close to a corner, or behind furniture has never been easier with the help of custom window treatments & professional installation.

Bay windows are always a focal point in any space they are in, and we can style them with the ideal look and function. The right shades will not take anything away from these windows, instead they will help you love them even more. With the right mount of the headrail, the window shades will look made for these windows!

Corner windows often offer a modern and airy feeling that so many are drawn to. It’s important to choose the right treatments for these tricky windows to ensure that they will not get in the way of each other when you are trying to adjust them.

Top down shades are amongst our favorite features. Why? Because they allow for beautiful daylighting while still blocking out the harsh rays in the lower part of the room. Transom windows do a gorgeous job of just this! However, we understand there are times when even transoms may be better covered with the right treatments in the name of light/heat control and privacy.

In the photo below, we see the tree offering some shade for this room which helps to keep it a comfortable temperature and atmosphere. The dark ceiling–a stunning feature–may darken the room slightly. Taking these aspects into consideration, the transoms are left bare to bring in the daylight available. Each and every decision made should be unique to your home and lifestyle.

Skylights… they are oh-so-beautiful, but what about those scorching hot days? These windows can let in a lot of heat that can become quite uncomfortable in the summer months. Adding treatments that are motorized are the way to go! The automation makes opening and closing the shades very simple so you can enjoy those skylights all day long.
