Have you joined in the smart home revolution? Or are you in search of answers? We get a lot of questions about smart blinds–what’s possible, how they work–that we thought we’d share with everyone who’s on the hunt for the newest way to add automation to their homes.
Which Type of Window Coverings Are Capable of Motorization?
In a nutshell–all of them: Blinds, shades, drapery and shutters. Yes, there are even automated shutters! Depending on the category of window treatments you choose, or the level of motorization you’d like, it can differ. But, they all have options.
What Is the Difference Between Them All?
You’ve probably heard a variety of words to describe smart blinds, like remote control shades, automated drapes or motorized blinds. Many times, the words are used as blanket terms for window coverings that have a motor–which is what they all have in common. The differences lie in the specific capabilities and features, and understanding those differences can be important. Some of our automated coverings are controlled via a wand or remote. Others are adjusted with an app on the phone, or with smart home integration and voice commands.
How Do You Set Up the App?
To begin with, our professional installers will set you up on the day of installation–answering you questions, showing the control features and guiding you through the process. But, we love to show off how the app works. Hunter Douglas does a great job of continuously updating the app for user-friendly control. Check it out:
Can Automated Shades Adjust Manually?
No, and that goes for any of the window coverings with motorization. Trying to adjust them manually can damage the motor.
Do Motorized Blinds Last a Long Time?
Yes–and there’s a good reason why! Without hands frequently touching them, they tend to stay flawless for a long time. The consistency of them being opened with a motor is partially responsible for the long-lasting durability.
How Do They Get Power?
You have two options for powering your smart blinds: Hardwired or battery power. Hardwiring shades at the windows with low voltage electrical is simple and effective, but usually only practical if you’re doing construction or renovations to your home. Many homeowners opt for battery power. If you use disposable batteries, you can expect to change them every 1-2 years, based on daily usage. To replace the use of disposable batteries, Hunter Douglas designed a rechargeable battery wand. This “wand” rests inside the headrail–replacing the area where the disposable batteries are housed.
Are Automated Window Coverings Considered Noisy?
No. The sound you’ll hear is described as “whisper” quiet, more like a low humming sound. This sound can only be heard as the motorized blinds adjust into position.
How Much Do Smart Shades Cost?
This is one of the top questions we get asked–and for good reason. Home improvements are expensive, and as a responsible consumer, you should make decisions based on your budget. Did you know that adding window treatments from a high quality brand like Hunter Douglas can increase the value of your home? And, it’s even more when they are automated. They are an investment, but one that pays off day after day. Just like any other features, adding automation to your window coverings can increase the cost. But, many clients are surprised at how affordable it can be. There are also a number of factors that affect the cost of motorized shades:
- Which kind of automation you choose (individual wand, remote control, app or smart home control)
- The number of window shades you need
- What type of coverings you select
- Added features, such as dual shades or top down
- Whether or not you have smart home devices to use with them
There’s Also “Hidden” Savings!
Home investments are full of ways they improve our lives, and the hidden savings of time and money should be a consideration. Our clients frequently comment that they don’t know how they lived without them. These are some of the benefits you’ll experience:
- Maintain interior temperatures with simple adjustments
- Ability to adjust hard-to-reach windows with no effort
- Time savings for adjusting multiple windows in an instant
- Feelings of increased security at night or while on vacation
- Value of using natural light instead of overhead lights
